Frequently Asked Questions about Museumpass Istanbul Public Transportation Card

Can tourists buy Istanbulkart?

Yes, tourists can easily buy an Istanbulkart, which is the official public transportation card of Istanbul.

Can I use 1 Istanbulkart for 2 people?

Yes, one Istanbulkart can be used for multiple passengers, but each person must tap the card separately when entering public transport. However, discounted transfers (transfer indirimleri) apply only to the first person using the card.

For example, if two people use the same card:

  • The first tap costs the standard fare (e.g., metro or tram fare).
  • The second tap will be charged at the full price again (instead of benefiting from the transfer discount).

For frequent travelers, it might be more cost-effective to have individual cards.

How do I pay public transport in Istanbul?

The main way to pay for public transport in Istanbul is using an Istanbulkart. This card can be used on:

  • Metro
  • Tram
  • Buses
  • Ferries
  • Metrobus

To pay, simply tap your Istanbulkart on the yellow card readers at station turnstiles or inside buses. Cash payments are NOT accepted on most public transport, so it’s essential to have an Istanbulkart.

Alternatively, Istanbul recently introduced a contactless credit card payment system on some routes, allowing tourists to pay directly with Visa, Mastercard, or mobile payment methods. However, this option is not yet available everywhere, so having an Istanbulkart is the most reliable choice.

Can you use Istanbulkart for metro?

İstanbulkart: The transportation card is called Istanbulkart and you can transfer between different routes of transport such as from the Marmaray to the metro, or from trams and between other modes of transportation provided by the İstanbul municipality all in one Istanbulkart.
