History of the Maiden's Tower

The origins of the Maiden’s Tower date back to the 5th century BCE, when it was first used as a customs station by the ancient Greeks. Over centuries, it was rebuilt and modified under the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.

In the 12th century, the Byzantines reinforced the tower for defensive purposes, and in 1453, after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, it was repurposed as a watchtower and lighthouse. It later served as a quarantine station during the 19th-century cholera outbreaks.

Following several restorations, including extensive renovations in 2022, the Maiden’s Tower reopened as a museum and cultural site, preserving its architectural heritage and historical significance.
